Welcome back to our first full week of classes of this year!  I am looking forward to a great semester to close our last year on the campus of Columbia HS.

A Days:
Honors (Pre-AP) Biology: We continue our study of cell reproduction (chapter 8) by comparing and contrasting the processes of mitosis and meiosis.
  • Monday, 1/9: HW check; discuss phases of mitosis; lab: mitosis slides.  HW: Read sec. 3 (Meiosis) and complete vocabulary, p. 161. Review sec. 1 & 2 for test on Thurs.
  • Wed., 1/11:: Review Sec. 3 objectives (p. 161). Discuss critical thinking questions, p. 164. 
  • Thurs., 1/12: Test Review. HW: Study for test Test: Ch. 8. (next Thursday)
Tech Essentials: Students will complete their website on bacteria and a bacterial disease and begin studying viruses. 
  • Monday, 1/9: Students will select a bacterial disease and complete research - notes in nb if they do not have internet acc
  • ey layout their page.
  • Tues., 1/10: Work on webpages: Bacteria and Bacterial Disease.  
  • Wed., 1/11:CW: Vocab. p. 467 + draw, ID, and give functions of typical bacterial cell (p. 468).  2) Discuss and point out that webpage instructions are on Moodle - website link.  3) Complete bacterial disease webpage.  Begin "Bacteria" webpage.  
  • Thurs., 1/12 CW: Video on Typhoid Mary.  Students will take notes in nb. Class discussion: Viral Structure and Replication (ch. 24, sec. 1).  HW:  vocab. p. 483; 
  • Fri., 1/13:   View video: How A Virus Attacks; CW: Compare and contrast bacteria and viruses (discuss + students will structure a table (NB) to complete this assignment.  Compare/contrast: Structure; Size; Reproduction; Classification; Diseases. Complete webpages on bacterial disease and bacteria.  Begin research on Viral Disease when these are completed.  HW: Study for test on Tuesday.  Test - notes, vocabulary, labeled image and functions, bacterial disease; comparison of bacteria and viruses. 
Principles of Engineering: Students will be making a bridge from three file folders that will support a specific weight and following specific instructions.  The objective is for them to learn some of the construction techniques of bridge building. 
  • Monday, 1/9: Teams will review assignment and assign roles; project timeline; research; begin drawings and pre-fabricating tubes and gussets
  • Wed., 1/11: Fabricate tubes and gussets; Begin construction. 
  • Thurs., 1/12: Bridge construction.   
B Days:


Multimedia: Students will begin using Audacity, audio editing software - first to learn some basic skills and then to complete a couple of simple projects.  Skills to learn include: importing; exporting as .mp3 and .wav files; trimming vs deleting; using the envelope tool for sound volume; adding effects. converting from stereo to mono and mono to stereo; and adding and deleting tracks.  Students will then use these skills for graded projects.

Students will also discuss and take notes on copyright laws, specifically as they apply to audio.
  • Edit audio by removing unwanted parts of sound and adding another track.
  • Remove vocals from a song
  • Edit a song to make a ringtone.  (Skills: delete; envelope tool; selection tool; effects; following directions)
Medical Tech Essentials: See Tues and Friday above
Honors Biology: Same as Mon and Wed A days (above)
