News: It's official - New Century will be a separate school but in a new location beginning next school year.  We are happy to keep our identity and look forward to sharing a new facility with Lee HS students and faculty.  


We also received the new calendar for 2011-2012.  We lose our week-long fall break again as it has been reduced to a four day weekend.  However, we will have a week off for Thanksgiving which  gives us two more days than we usually receive.

A Days: (Mon., Wed., Thurs)
Honors (Pre-AP) Biology: We started our unit on genetics last week and will finish it this week.  Objectives to be covered include:  
    • Explain why and how Mendel studied pea plants.
    • Complete monohybrid and dihybrid crosses and explain the results
    • State Mendel's laws of segregation and independent assortment and explain each
  • Monday, 1/23: Study skills for chapter vocabulary.  Online video: Greg Mendel. Activity:  Genotype/Phenotype.  Khan Academy video: Genotype/Phenotype.  HW: Sec Rev p. 186.  Study for test on Thurs.
  • Wed., 1/25: HW Check.  CW: Punnet Squares practice
  • Thurs., 1/26: Test chapter 9. Read Ch 10, sec. 2 and complete vocabulary p. 196. 
Medical Tech Essentials: Students completed their websites last week.  This week they will learn how to use an online presentation tool called Prezi and begin a study of how the body changes at puberty using an online textbook.  In addition, they will continue reading "The Hot Zone" book, about a virus outbreak.
  • Monday, 1/23: Read "The Hot Zone" and take notes on plot as well as unknown vocabulary. Go to Prezi website and sign up for education account as a student.  Review tutorials.  and take notes on how to add text, images, and video move around. HW:  Complete vocabulary p. 483, 489.  Select 3 terms from sec. 1 and 3 from sec. 2 and draw out Prezi storyboard to define each.  One should have an image and one should have a video.
  • Tues., 1/24: Read  "The Hot Zone".  Complete Prezi presentation.HW: Bring in a picture of yourself, ages 2-5
  • Wed., 1/25: Read  "The Hot Zone".  Present Prezi presentations. HW: Still need that picture!
  • Thurs., 1/26: Read  "The Hot Zone". Notes: Puberty and how the body changes
  • Fri., 1/27: Read  "The Hot Zone". Notes:  Body Growth during puberty.
Principles of Engineering: Students will finish their bridge using only 3 file folders and following specific instructions.  
  • Monday, 1/23: Bridge construction. Register for West Point Bridge Building contest. Review software and begin models.
  • Wed., 1/25: Bridge construction.  West Point Bridge Building contest. Review software and begin models.
  • Thurs., 1/26Bridge testing.  West Point Bridge Building contest. Review software and begin models.  
B Days: (Tues., Fri.)
Multimedia: Students will use Audacity to create an audio podcast.  
Medical Tech Essentials: See Tues and Friday above
Honors Biology: Same as Mon and Wed A days (above) TEST on Tuesday.

A Day (Thursday)
Honors (Pre-AP) Biology: We are ending our unit on the cell and beginning a study of genetics.
  • Thurs.,1/19: Test, Chapter 8.  CW: vocabulary, p. 173 HW: Read Sec 2 - Genetic Crosses - and complete vocabulary, p. 180.
Intro to Med Tech Essentials: Students will complete our overview of bacteria and viruses and begin an essay on a specific career field based on a career survey.
  • Tues., 1/17: Test Bacteria, Classification, Viruses, Typhoid Mary Video.  CW: 
  • Wed., 1/18:    Complete STAR math testCW:  Complete webpages on Bacteria and Bacterial Disease. Begin or complete research on viral disease.  Begin or complete website on viral disease.  Begin or complete work on Viruses and Home webpages.
  • Thurs.,1/19: Complete website. If complete, learn how to use Prezi, an online visualization tool.  Review the "getting started" tutorial, sign up for an account (WRITE DOWN YOUR LOGIN INFO!!!). Practice with info on either your bacterial or viral disease.
  • Fri., 1/20:  Complete website.  If completed, continue work with Prezi.  Begin book: The Hot Zone.  Take notes as well as write terms/words/vocabulary you do not know.
Principles of Engineering: Students will continue their study on bridges.  Specifically, they are building a bridge using 3 file folders that will hold a 5 kg weight.

Multimedia:  We are continuing to create original audio.  Resources include the online website, Aviary, and the software, Audacity. 
  • Tues., 1/17Duplicate a known melody using Aviary Roc; Create an original melody using Roc (Aviary Music Creator).  Upload these two plus Friday's assign to Moodle
    • Wed., 1/18: Remove vocals from a song using Audacity.
    • Fri., 1/20: Create ringtones using Audacity.
