Anatomy and Physiology: 8/31 - 9/3

Students will be working on a project to determine the effectiveness of various energy drinks.  Objectives include: 
  • Define energy in a biological / nutritional context.
  • Identify valid biochemical sources of energy.
  • Discuss how foods are metabolized to generate ATP.
  • Critically evaluate marketing claims for various energy drinks.
  • Describe and categorize chemically the components of various popular “energy drinks.”
  • Determine the physiological role of these components in the human body.
  • Explain scientifically how the marketing claims for these drinks are supported (or not).
  • Determine under what conditions each of the “energy drinks” might be useful to the consumer.
